Trip To Corsica: The Art Of ChanceI think that the art of this century will begin to move away from its focus on the machine, as in the last century, and towards the natural, the earth-based. As we get reacquainted with this planet, from which we have become so disconnected,

My Son Will Build A House There #2 - 120cm x 30cm (47" x 12") - glue, water, dry pigment, old paintbrush, oil paint, cotton string, pastel, chalk, sand from Niger, ink on board - Soldart will reflect that reunion.
In 2005 I had the opportunity to explore the Mediterranean island of Corsica. Tumbling down hairpin roads with shocks of blue swirling below, reddish cliffs, peach earth behind massive boulders, I was greatly influenced by the experience. I came back to my studio on the mainland and created Trip To Corsica: The Art of Chance. With its geometric composition it was unlike anything I had done before and I hadn't worked on board for fifteen years. Other paintings came careening into reality like our rented Renault almost hurtling off a tiny country road near Evisa to avoid a family of pigs.

My Senegalese mentor, Ousseynou Sarr, while teaching me his mixed-media technique of earth and dry pigment, believed that the greatest paintings were the ones which combined the earth technique with the Western technique of oil paint, turpentine and varnish. With this series I have sought to do this. There is a mix of the raw and the processed.

I think one of the greatest allies that any artist has in the studio is spontaneity, or chance. I've always enjoyed the parts of paintings that seem to happen on their own. In this context I have been hugely influenced by the work of the UK's Boyle Family over the last year. In their Earth Series, they work hand in hand with chance by throwing a dart at a world map and then going to that spot in that country and recreating a piece of Earth that they find there. This is not so much the artist as master but the artist as pollen on the wind, as taken by chance, as vagabond, making a long trip based on a dart throw, and presenting a piece of the Earth without embellishment or style.

And it is in those moments when we let the Earth take over, when we turn off the active mind, that we record our greatest work.

The moment you let go of something is the moment you receive it.
